The API 527 joins the family of API VCA-based compressors, alongside the 225L and the 2500 Stereo Bus Compressor. Those familiar with these units will feel right at home with the 527. Like its counterparts, it offers both "feed-forward" (NEW) and "feed-back" (OLD) gain reduction methods, selectable from the front panel. This provides maximum flexibility, allowing users to choose between the traditional "old way" of compression or the more modern approach.

The "feed-back" method, used in most classic compressors, relies on gain control circuits that react to the processed signal. In contrast, the "feed-forward" method, common in newer VCA compressors, utilizes RMS detectors to determine gain reduction.

Features:

Audio circuit with 2510 and 2520 discrete op-amps and transformer output
Continuously variable, detented controls for Threshold, Attack, Release, and Ratio
Output Fader level control
10-segment VU/Gain Reduction meter with selector switch
Overload LED indicator
"Link" switch for multiple-unit compression linking
"New"/"Old" switch for feed-forward or feed-back compression selection
"Hard"/"Soft" knee compression curve switch
Patented THRUST® switch for frequency-dependent sidechain control
"IN" switch with hard relay bypass when in the "Out" position
