The LinnDrum, Linn Electronics' second drum machine, was an enhanced version of the LM-1, adding crash and ride cymbals and improving sample quality to 35kHz. Featuring 15 realistic acoustic drum samples—including kick, snare, toms, hi-hats, cymbals, and percussion—it allowed up to 12 sounds to play simultaneously. Each drum had dedicated tuning, panning, and mix controls, plus accents for kick, snare, and hats.
The LinnDrum offered flexible upgrades via swappable sound chips and innovative sequencing features like swing, quantize, and memory for 56 user patterns, 42 presets, and 49 song slots. Patterns could be recorded in real or step time and saved to cassette. With 15 individual outputs, external sync, and live drum trigger inputs (but no MIDI), the LinnDrum became the go-to professional drum machine of the 1980s.
